Oakland A’s activate Trevor Cahill from DL, option Chris Bassitt to Triple-A

The Oakland A’s activated pitcher Trevor Cahill from the disabled list Thursday morning, the team announced. He’ll start the day’s game in Houston. To make room on the roster, fellow pitcher Chris Bassitt was optioned back to Triple-A Nashville.

It’s been over a month since we’ve seen Cahill, who last pitched on June 2. He eventually went on the DL with a strained Achilles, marking his second time on the list this season (previously: elbow in mid-May). The right-hander only needed one rehab start in the minors this time, in which he threw four scoreless innings and struck out seven batters. When healthy he’s been one of the A’s better starters, but he’s only managed to pitch in eight MLB games so far.

Cahill, 2018: 2.77 ERA, 48⅔ ip, 47 Ks, 11 BB, 4 HR, 3.07 FIP

Heading out for now is Bassitt, who started on Wednesday in a winning effort against the Astros. The right-hander has done a decent job filling in for the beleaguered rotation but has only managed two quality starts in six tries, and has only pitched past the 6th inning once. On the bright side, though, he’s also avoided any huge disaster games. He could wind up in a long relief role later in the season, suggests Susan Slusser of the S.F. Chronicle.

The rotation now features Sean Manaea, Edwin Jackson, Cahill, and Brett Anderson, who just got off the DL recently himself. Daniel Mengden is also expected to return soon from his own stint on the shelf. The bullpen still stands at nine members for the moment, which is convenient since the relievers have already put in a ton of work in this current series in Houston and they still have three NL-style games coming up against the Giants. Expect more moves after the All-Star break to get the staff fully sorted out for the second half of the season.
